يَٰٓأَيُّهَا ٱلَّذِينَ ءَامَنُوٓاْ إِنَّمَا ٱلۡخَمۡرُ وَٱلۡمَيۡسِرُ وَٱلۡأَنصَابُ وَٱلۡأَزۡلَٰمُ رِجۡسٞ مِّنۡ عَمَلِ ٱلشَّيۡطَٰنِ فَٱجۡتَنِبُوهُ لَعَلَّكُمۡ تُفۡلِحُونَ
O you who have believed, indeed, intoxicants, gambling, [sacrificing on] stone alters [to other than Allāh], and divining arrows are but defilement from the work of Satan, so avoid282 it that you may be successful.
Translator notes (1)
- 282 The prohibition understood from the word "avoid" is stronger than if Allāh (subḥānahu wa taʿālā) had merely said, "Abstain." The former requires distancing oneself from anything remotely related to these practices.

Al-Mukhtasar
O you who believe, intoxicants that affect the mind, gambling with a contribution from both sides, stone altars on which the polytheists offer sacrifices to honor them or which they erect for worship, and divining arrows to seek out their share of the unseen – these are all sinful acts that the Devil has made attractive. Avoid such actions so that you successfully achieve a noble life in this world and the bliss of Paradise in the hereafter.
