And a faction of the People of the Scripture say [to each other], "Believe in that which was revealed to the believers at the beginning of the day and reject it at its end that perhaps they will return [i.e., abandon their religion],

Al-Mukhtasar
A group of Jewish scholars said: pretend to accept the Quran, which was revealed to the believers at the start of the day, and then reject it at the end of the day so that, after seeing this, the believers will begin to have doubts about their religion and turn back from it saying: These people know better about Allah's Books, and they have turned their backs.
