وَكَأَيِّن مِّن قَرۡيَةٍ عَتَتۡ عَنۡ أَمۡرِ رَبِّهَا وَرُسُلِهِۦ فَحَاسَبۡنَٰهَا حِسَابٗا شَدِيدٗا وَعَذَّبۡنَٰهَا عَذَابٗا نُّكۡرٗا
And how many a city was insolent toward the command of its Lord and His messengers, so We took it to severe account and punished it with a terrible punishment.

Al-Mukhtasar
After mentioning several commands, Allah warns against turning away from those commands and says that the result would be terrible. He states:
And how many were the towns We punished severely for disobeying their Lord and His messengers (may peace be upon them)! We held them gravely accountable for their wrongdoings and afflicted them with a vicious torment in this world and in the Hereafter.
