فَلَمۡ يَكُ يَنفَعُهُمۡ إِيمَٰنُهُمۡ لَمَّا رَأَوۡاْ بَأۡسَنَاۖ سُنَّتَ ٱللَّهِ ٱلَّتِي قَدۡ خَلَتۡ فِي عِبَادِهِۦۖ وَخَسِرَ هُنَالِكَ ٱلۡكَٰفِرُونَ
But never did their faith benefit them once they saw Our punishment. [It is] the established way of Allāh which has preceded among His servants. And the disbelievers thereupon lost [all].

Al-Mukhtasar
So believing after seeing Our punishment descending upon them will not benefit them. The way of Allah with His slaves has consistently been that believing after witnessing the punishment with their eyes is useless. The disbelievers condemned themselves at the time when the punishment descended by having put themselves in a place of destruction because they disbelieved in Allah and did not repent from that before seeing the punishment.
