وَمَا كَانَ ٱلنَّاسُ إِلَّآ أُمَّةٗ وَٰحِدَةٗ فَٱخۡتَلَفُواْۚ وَلَوۡلَا كَلِمَةٞ سَبَقَتۡ مِن رَّبِّكَ لَقُضِيَ بَيۡنَهُمۡ فِيمَا فِيهِ يَخۡتَلِفُونَ
And mankind was not but one community [united in religion], but [then] they differed. And if not for a word517 that preceded from your Lord, it would have been judged between them [immediately] concerning that over which they differ.

Al-Mukhtasar
And humanity was just one nation believing in Allah's Oneness; then they differed: some remained upon belief in Allah, while others disbelieved. Had it not been for Allah's prior decree that He would not judge between them in what they differed about in this world and that He would only judge between them on the Day of Resurrection, He would have judged between them in what they differed about in this world by saving the believers and destroying the rejecting disbelievers.
