ذَٰلِكَ بِأَنَّهُمۡ شَآقُّواْ ٱللَّهَ وَرَسُولَهُۥۚ وَمَن يُشَاقِقِ ٱللَّهَ وَرَسُولَهُۥ فَإِنَّ ٱللَّهَ شَدِيدُ ٱلۡعِقَابِ
That is because they opposed Allāh and His Messenger. And whoever opposes Allāh and His Messenger - indeed, Allāh is severe in penalty.

Al-Mukhtasar
That killing and striking of limbs which befell the disbelievers was because they opposed Allah and His Messenger. So, they did not fulfill what they were ordered to do and did not cease what they were forbidden from. Whoever opposes Allah and His Messenger in that, then indeed, Allah is severe in punishment to them with killing and capture in this life and with the Fire in the Afterlife.
