فَلَمَّا كَشَفۡنَا عَنۡهُمُ ٱلرِّجۡزَ إِلَىٰٓ أَجَلٍ هُم بَٰلِغُوهُ إِذَا هُمۡ يَنكُثُونَ
But when We removed the punishment from them until a term which they were to reach,398 then at once they broke their word.

Al-Mukhtasar
Then, when We lifted the torment from them for a set time, before their destruction by drowning, they reneged from what they had taken upon themselves to believe and release the Children of Israel. So they persisted in their disbelief and did not allow the Israelites to go with Moses (peace be upon him).
