وَإِذۡ قَالَتۡ أُمَّةٞ مِّنۡهُمۡ لِمَ تَعِظُونَ قَوۡمًا ٱللَّهُ مُهۡلِكُهُمۡ أَوۡ مُعَذِّبُهُمۡ عَذَابٗا شَدِيدٗاۖ قَالُواْ مَعۡذِرَةً إِلَىٰ رَبِّكُمۡ وَلَعَلَّهُمۡ يَتَّقُونَ
And when a community among them said, "Why do you advise [or warn] a people whom Allāh is [about] to destroy or to punish with a severe punishment?" they [the advisors] said, "To be absolved before your Lord and perhaps they may fear Him."

Al-Mukhtasar
Mention, O Messenger, when a group among them prohibited them from this objectionable act and warned them against it. Then, another group said to them: Why do you advise a group who either Allah will destroy in this life due to the sins it committed or torment it severely on the Day of Resurrection? The advising ones said: Our advice to them is an excuse to Allah by doing what we were commanded with of enjoining good and forbidding evil so that we are not taken to account for leaving that off. And so that they might benefit from the admonishment and then abstain from the acts of disobedience they are engaged in.
