وَلَوۡ أَنَّ أَهۡلَ ٱلۡقُرَىٰٓ ءَامَنُواْ وَٱتَّقَوۡاْ لَفَتَحۡنَا عَلَيۡهِم بَرَكَٰتٖ مِّنَ ٱلسَّمَآءِ وَٱلۡأَرۡضِ وَلَٰكِن كَذَّبُواْ فَأَخَذۡنَٰهُم بِمَا كَانُواْ يَكۡسِبُونَ
And if only the people of the cities had believed and feared Allāh, We would have opened [i.e., bestowed] upon them blessings from the heaven and the earth; but they denied [the messengers], so We seized them for what they were earning.385

Al-Mukhtasar
If the people of these towns to which We sent Our messengers had believed in what their messengers brought them and had been heedful of their Lord by abandoning disbelief and acts of disobedience and complying with His commands, then We would have opened to them the gates of goodness from every direction. But instead, they did not believe and were not heedful of Him. Instead, they rejected what their messengers came with. So We suddenly seized them with torment because of what they used to earn of sins and transgressions.
