ثُمَّ بَدَّلۡنَا مَكَانَ ٱلسَّيِّئَةِ ٱلۡحَسَنَةَ حَتَّىٰ عَفَواْ وَّقَالُواْ قَدۡ مَسَّ ءَابَآءَنَا ٱلضَّرَّآءُ وَٱلسَّرَّآءُ فَأَخَذۡنَٰهُم بَغۡتَةٗ وَهُمۡ لَا يَشۡعُرُونَ
Then We exchanged in place of the bad [condition], good, until they increased [and prospered] and said, "Our fathers [also] were touched with hardship and ease."383 So We seized them suddenly while they did not perceive.384

Al-Mukhtasar
Then We replaced them, after seizing them with suffering and illness, with goodness, well-being, and security, until they numbered many, their wealth increased, and they said: What afflicted us of good and evil is a perpetual norm. It occurred to our predecessors before. They did not recognize that what afflicted them was intended to teach them a lesson, while the good they were given was meant to draw out [their punishment]. Then Allah suddenly seized them with the torment they did not sense or expect.
