لِّلَّذِينَ يُؤۡلُونَ مِن نِّسَآئِهِمۡ تَرَبُّصُ أَرۡبَعَةِ أَشۡهُرٖۖ فَإِن فَآءُو فَإِنَّ ٱللَّهَ غَفُورٞ رَّحِيمٞ
For those who swear not to have sexual relations with their wives85 is a waiting time of four months, but if they return [to normal relations] - then indeed, Allāh is Forgiving and Merciful.
Translator notes (1)
- 85 Without divorcing them. By such an oath the woman is deprived of her right in marriage but is not free to marry another. She may not be kept in such a condition beyond the four-month limit.

Al-Mukhtasar
For those who swear an oath not to have sexual intercourse with their wives, there is a waiting period not longer than four months, starting from the date of the oath. This is known as al-Elaa (Oath of Abstinence). If he abandons the oath and engages in sexual intercourse after having sworn not to, and this happens within the four months, then Allah forgives them. Allah is merciful and has established expiation as a way out from such an oath.
