ذَٰلِكَ بِأَنَّهُمۡ شَآقُّواْ ٱللَّهَ وَرَسُولَهُۥۖ وَمَن يُشَآقِّ ٱللَّهَ فَإِنَّ ٱللَّهَ شَدِيدُ ٱلۡعِقَابِ
That is because they opposed Allāh and His Messenger. And whoever opposes Allāh - then indeed, Allāh is severe in penalty.

Al-Mukhtasar
That happened to them because they opposed Allah and His Messenger through disbelief and breaking covenants. And whoever opposes Allah, then Allah is severe in punishment, and His severe punishment will reach him.
