Surah An-Nisa 4:15 النساء

وَٱلَّٰتِي يَأۡتِينَ ٱلۡفَٰحِشَةَ مِن نِّسَآئِكُمۡ فَٱسۡتَشۡهِدُواْ عَلَيۡهِنَّ أَرۡبَعَةٗ مِّنكُمۡۖ فَإِن شَهِدُواْ فَأَمۡسِكُوهُنَّ فِي ٱلۡبُيُوتِ حَتَّىٰ يَتَوَفَّىٰهُنَّ ٱلۡمَوۡتُ أَوۡ يَجۡعَلَ ٱللَّهُ لَهُنَّ سَبِيلٗا

Those who commit immorality [i.e., unlawful sexual intercourse] of your women - bring against them four [witnesses] from among you. And if they testify,¹⁶⁹ confine them [i.e., the guilty women] to houses until death takes them or Allāh ordains for them [another] way.¹⁷⁰

170 The "other way" (i.e., penalty) was later revealed in 24:2, canceling the ruling in this verse.

Al-Mukhtasar

For those of your women who commit the disgrace of fornication, whether married or unmarried, seek out four Muslim men of integrity to bear witness against her. If they give testimony against them for its commission, then confine them to their homes as a punishment until the end of their lives or until Allah makes a way for them other than being confined. After this, Allah made a path for them by legislating that previously unmarried women be lashed one hundred times and banished for a year. A previously married woman is stoned.
