وَلَوۡ أَنَّا كَتَبۡنَا عَلَيۡهِمۡ أَنِ ٱقۡتُلُوٓاْ أَنفُسَكُمۡ أَوِ ٱخۡرُجُواْ مِن دِيَٰرِكُم مَّا فَعَلُوهُ إِلَّا قَلِيلٞ مِّنۡهُمۡۖ وَلَوۡ أَنَّهُمۡ فَعَلُواْ مَا يُوعَظُونَ بِهِۦ لَكَانَ خَيۡرٗا لَّهُمۡ وَأَشَدَّ تَثۡبِيتٗا
And if We had decreed upon them, "Kill yourselves" or "Leave your homes," they would not have done it, except for a few of them. But if they had done what they were instructed, it would have been better for them and a firmer position [for them in faith].

Al-Mukhtasar
If We had obligated them to kill each other or to depart from their homes, no one would have obeyed Our command except a small number. So, they should be grateful to Allah for not imposing what would be difficult for them. If they had done what was mentioned out of obedience to Allah, it would have been better than the contrary and stronger in firming up their faith. We would have granted them an immense reward and guided them to the path that leads to Allah and His Paradise.
