وَلَنُذِيقَنَّهُم مِّنَ ٱلۡعَذَابِ ٱلۡأَدۡنَىٰ دُونَ ٱلۡعَذَابِ ٱلۡأَكۡبَرِ لَعَلَّهُمۡ يَرۡجِعُونَ
And We will surely let them taste the nearer punishment1175 short of the greater punishment that perhaps they will return [i.e., repent].

Al-Mukhtasar
We will make these disbelievers who left the obedience of their Lord and do not repent suffer trials and afflictions in this worldly life before the major punishment, for perhaps due to those worldly afflictions, they will repent to Allah.
