Then We inspired to Moses, "Strike with your staff the sea," and it parted, and each portion was like a great towering mountain.

Al-Mukhtasar
We revealed to Moses, commanding him to strike the sea with his staff, and so he did. The sea parted into twelve paths, the number of the tribes of the Israelites. Each path cut from the sea was like a tremendous and stable mountain from which water does not leak.
