وَعَلَى ٱلثَّلَٰثَةِ ٱلَّذِينَ خُلِّفُواْ حَتَّىٰٓ إِذَا ضَاقَتۡ عَلَيۡهِمُ ٱلۡأَرۡضُ بِمَا رَحُبَتۡ وَضَاقَتۡ عَلَيۡهِمۡ أَنفُسُهُمۡ وَظَنُّوٓاْ أَن لَّا مَلۡجَأَ مِنَ ٱللَّهِ إِلَّآ إِلَيۡهِ ثُمَّ تَابَ عَلَيۡهِمۡ لِيَتُوبُوٓاْۚ إِنَّ ٱللَّهَ هُوَ ٱلتَّوَّابُ ٱلرَّحِيمُ
And [He also forgave] the three who were left alone [i.e., boycotted, regretting their error] to the point that the earth closed in on them in spite of its vastness505 and their souls confined [i.e., anguished] them and they were certain that there is no refuge from Allāh except in Him. Then He turned to them so they could repent. Indeed, Allāh is the Accepting of Repentance,506 the Merciful.

Al-Mukhtasar
Allah forgave the three, Murarah bin Al-Rabi, Ka'b bin Malik and Hilal bin Umayyah. Their repentance and acceptance were delayed after they stayed behind instead of going to Tabuk with Allah's Messenger صلى الله عليه وسلم. The Prophet صلى الله عليه وسلم instructed people to stay away from them, making them feel sadness and grief. The Earth seemed narrow to them despite its vastness, and their hearts felt constricted because of their loneliness. They were certain there was no place of refuge or help they could go to except Allah alone. Allah was Merciful to them by inspiring them to repent to Him and accepting their repentance. Allah is the One who accepts the repentance from His slaves and is full of mercy and compassion for them.
