ٱشۡتَرَوۡاْ بِـَٔايَٰتِ ٱللَّهِ ثَمَنٗا قَلِيلٗا فَصَدُّواْ عَن سَبِيلِهِۦٓۚ إِنَّهُمۡ سَآءَ مَا كَانُواْ يَعۡمَلُونَ
They have exchanged the signs of Allāh for a small price and averted [people] from His way. Indeed, it was evil that they were doing.

Al-Mukhtasar
They took compensation and replaced following the verses of Allah, including the fulfillment of covenants, for a trivial worthless price from the wreckage of the world with which they reach their lusts and whims. So, they prevented themselves from following the truth, turned away from it, and prevented others from the truth. They have gone wrong with the work they were doing.
