فَأَمَّا عَادٞ فَٱسۡتَكۡبَرُواْ فِي ٱلۡأَرۡضِ بِغَيۡرِ ٱلۡحَقِّ وَقَالُواْ مَنۡ أَشَدُّ مِنَّا قُوَّةًۖ أَوَلَمۡ يَرَوۡاْ أَنَّ ٱللَّهَ ٱلَّذِي خَلَقَهُمۡ هُوَ أَشَدُّ مِنۡهُمۡ قُوَّةٗۖ وَكَانُواْ بِـَٔايَٰتِنَا يَجۡحَدُونَ
As for ʿAad, they were arrogant upon the earth without right and said, "Who is greater than us in strength?" Did they not consider that Allāh who created them was greater than them in strength? But they were rejecting Our signs.

Al-Mukhtasar
As for the people of Hūd, 'Ād, together with their disbelief in Allah, they displayed excessive arrogance on Earth and oppressed those around them. Having been deceived by their own strength, they said: Who is there that is stronger than us? They assumed that no one was stronger than them, so Allah replied to them: Do these people not know and see that the One who created them and gave them the strength that made them rebellious is stronger than them? They would reject the signs of Allah that Hūd (peace be upon him) brought to them.
