وَقَالُواْ قُلُوبُنَا فِيٓ أَكِنَّةٖ مِّمَّا تَدۡعُونَآ إِلَيۡهِ وَفِيٓ ءَاذَانِنَا وَقۡرٞ وَمِنۢ بَيۡنِنَا وَبَيۡنِكَ حِجَابٞ فَٱعۡمَلۡ إِنَّنَا عَٰمِلُونَ
And they say, "Our hearts are within coverings [i.e., screened] from that to which you invite us, and in our ears is deafness, and between us and you is a partition, so work;1383 indeed, we are working."

Al-Mukhtasar
And they say: Our hearts are covered with multiple layers, so we do not comprehend what you are calling us to. Our ears cannot hear what you are saying. There is a barrier between you and us; none of your speech reaches us, so you carry on doing things your way, and we will do things our way. We will never follow you.
