أُوْلَٰٓئِكَ لَمۡ يَكُونُواْ مُعۡجِزِينَ فِي ٱلۡأَرۡضِ وَمَا كَانَ لَهُم مِّن دُونِ ٱللَّهِ مِنۡ أَوۡلِيَآءَۘ يُضَٰعَفُ لَهُمُ ٱلۡعَذَابُۚ مَا كَانُواْ يَسۡتَطِيعُونَ ٱلسَّمۡعَ وَمَا كَانُواْ يُبۡصِرُونَ
Those were not causing failure [to Allāh] on earth, nor did they have besides Allāh any protectors. For them the punishment will be multiplied. They were not able to hear, nor did they see.557

Al-Mukhtasar
People such as this will not be able to escape Allah's punishment in this life, and they have no allies or protectors besides Allah who can stop the punishment of Allah from reaching them. So, their punishment on the Day of Resurrection will be increased because they turned away and turned others away from Allah's path. Thus, in the life of this world, they were not able to hear the truth and guidance in a way that led them to accept it, nor were they able to see Allah's signs throughout the universe in a way that benefited them because of their total disregard of the truth.
