Letter forms and joining

This is the rung that turns an alphabet chart into reading. A letter you recognise on its own can look unfamiliar in the middle of a word, and the reason is always the same: the joining strokes changed, the letter did not.

The 4 forms every letter takes

Here is ba (ب) in all four positions. Read the row right to left, the way the letters actually sit in a word.

IsolatedInitialMedialFinal
ب ب‍ ‍ب‍ ‍ب
standing alone first letter of a word joined on both sides last letter, joined behind

Notice the dot never moves and the bowl never changes. What changes is the tail: it is cut away when another letter has to attach in front.

The 6 letters that break the join

alif, dal, dhal, ra, zay, waw attach to the letter behind them but never to the letter in front. So they have an isolated form and a final form and nothing else, and the letter after one of them starts as if it were beginning a new word.

LetterIsolatedFinalInitialMedial
alif ا ‍ا none none
dal د ‍د none none
dhal ذ ‍ذ none none
ra ر ‍ر none none
zay ز ‍ز none none
waw و ‍و none none

This is why a word can look like it has a gap in the middle. The gap is not a space between words; it is one of these six letters ending its run.

3 real words to read

The highlighted part is the join the word turns on.

ٱلۡحَمۡدُ

The dal at the end joins only backwards, so nothing can follow it inside the word.

Surah Al-Fatihah 1:2

يَوۡمِ

Waw is one of the six that never join forward, so the mim after it starts a fresh shape in the middle of the same word.

Surah Al-Fatihah 1:4

نَسۡتَعِينُ

Six letters run together in one unbroken join here: noon, sin, ta, ayn, yaa, noon.

Surah Al-Fatihah 1:5

Check yourself

How many letters have four forms?

Twenty-two. The other six have two, because they never join forward.

Why is there a gap in the middle of some words?

One of the six non-connectors has ended its run. The next letter starts a fresh shape, but it is still the same word.

Does the shape change the sound?

No. The four forms are the same letter written for four different positions; the sound is identical in all of them.
