وَإِنِّي كُلَّمَا دَعَوۡتُهُمۡ لِتَغۡفِرَ لَهُمۡ جَعَلُوٓاْ أَصَٰبِعَهُمۡ فِيٓ ءَاذَانِهِمۡ وَٱسۡتَغۡشَوۡاْ ثِيَابَهُمۡ وَأَصَرُّواْ وَٱسۡتَكۡبَرُواْ ٱسۡتِكۡبَارٗا
And indeed, every time I invited them that You may forgive them, they put their fingers in their ears, covered themselves with their garments,1761 persisted, and were arrogant with [great] arrogance.

Al-Mukhtasar
And indeed, each time I call them, it will cause the forgiveness of their sins, which is worshipping You alone, obedience to You, and obedience to Your messenger; they close their ears with their fingers to prevent hearing my call, cover their faces with their clothes so as not to see me, persist in the polytheism they are upon, and become arrogant of accepting and yielding to what I call them to.
