And those before them denied, and they [i.e., the people of Makkah] have not attained a tenth of what We had given them. But they [i.e., the former peoples] denied My messengers, so how [terrible] was My reproach.

Al-Mukhtasar
The previous nations, such as 'Ād, Thamūd, and the people of Lot, were deniers of faith. And the polytheists from your people have not reached even a tenth of the strength, might, and numbers the previous nations reached. Every one of them denied their messenger, so the wealth, strength, and numbers they were given did not benefit them, so My punishment befell them. So, see the outcome of My Reproach and that of My punishment.
