وَٱنطَلَقَ ٱلۡمَلَأُ مِنۡهُمۡ أَنِ ٱمۡشُواْ وَٱصۡبِرُواْ عَلَىٰٓ ءَالِهَتِكُمۡۖ إِنَّ هَٰذَا لَشَيۡءٞ يُرَادُ
And the eminent among them went forth, [saying], "Continue, and be patient over [the defense of] your gods. Indeed, this is a thing intended.1318

Al-Mukhtasar
And their nobles and elders went forth, saying to their followers: Carry on with what you are upon and do not enter the religion of Muhammad. Remain firm upon worshipping your deities. That which Muhammad is inviting you towards, namely worshipping one God, is something planned that he wants so that he can reign supreme over us and we become his followers.
