وَمَا كَانَ ٱللَّهُ لِيُعَذِّبَهُمۡ وَأَنتَ فِيهِمۡۚ وَمَا كَانَ ٱللَّهُ مُعَذِّبَهُمۡ وَهُمۡ يَسۡتَغۡفِرُونَ
But Allāh would not punish them while you, [O Muḥammad], are among them, and Allāh would not punish them while they seek forgiveness.

Al-Mukhtasar
Allah would not torment your nation, whether they are from the nation that answered [your call] or from the nation of being called, with a torment that would eradicate them while you, O Muhammad, are alive and present among them. Thus, your presence among them is a safeguard for them from torment. Also, Allah would not punish them while they seek forgiveness from Allah for their sins.
