وَمِنَ ٱلنَّاسِ مَن يَقُولُ ءَامَنَّا بِٱللَّهِ فَإِذَآ أُوذِيَ فِي ٱللَّهِ جَعَلَ فِتۡنَةَ ٱلنَّاسِ كَعَذَابِ ٱللَّهِۖ وَلَئِن جَآءَ نَصۡرٞ مِّن رَّبِّكَ لَيَقُولُنَّ إِنَّا كُنَّا مَعَكُمۡۚ أَوَلَيۡسَ ٱللَّهُ بِأَعۡلَمَ بِمَا فِي صُدُورِ ٱلۡعَٰلَمِينَ
And of the people are some who say, "We believe in Allāh," but when one [of them] is harmed for [the cause of] Allāh, he considers the trial [i.e., harm] of the people as [if it were] the punishment of Allāh. But if victory comes from your Lord, they say, "Indeed, We were with you." Is not Allāh most knowing of what is within the breasts of the worlds [i.e., all creatures]?

Al-Mukhtasar
Some people say that they believe in Allah. Then, when the disbelievers harm them for their belief, they consider the torment of the disbelievers to be like the torment of Allah and leave the faith agreeing with them. But if you, O Messenger, are supported by your Lord, they will say: Indeed, we believe with you, O believers. Is Allah not fully aware of what is in the people's hearts?! Nothing of their faith or disbelief is hidden from Him. So how could they inform Allah about what is in their hearts while He knows what they contain better than they do?!
