وَلَمَّا سُقِطَ فِيٓ أَيۡدِيهِمۡ وَرَأَوۡاْ أَنَّهُمۡ قَدۡ ضَلُّواْ قَالُواْ لَئِن لَّمۡ يَرۡحَمۡنَا رَبُّنَا وَيَغۡفِرۡ لَنَا لَنَكُونَنَّ مِنَ ٱلۡخَٰسِرِينَ
And when regret overcame them406 and they saw that they had gone astray, they said, "If our Lord does not have mercy upon us and forgive us, we will surely be among the losers."

Al-Mukhtasar
When they regretted their actions, became bewildered, and realized that they had gone astray from the straight path by taking the calf as an object of worship alongside Allah, they said: If our Lord does not have mercy on us by granting us success to obey Him and forgive us for the worship of the calf which we engaged in, then we will undoubtedly be among those who lose their worldly life and Afterlife.
