وَٱخۡتَارَ مُوسَىٰ قَوۡمَهُۥ سَبۡعِينَ رَجُلٗا لِّمِيقَٰتِنَاۖ فَلَمَّآ أَخَذَتۡهُمُ ٱلرَّجۡفَةُ قَالَ رَبِّ لَوۡ شِئۡتَ أَهۡلَكۡتَهُم مِّن قَبۡلُ وَإِيَّٰيَۖ أَتُهۡلِكُنَا بِمَا فَعَلَ ٱلسُّفَهَآءُ مِنَّآۖ إِنۡ هِيَ إِلَّا فِتۡنَتُكَ تُضِلُّ بِهَا مَن تَشَآءُ وَتَهۡدِي مَن تَشَآءُۖ أَنتَ وَلِيُّنَا فَٱغۡفِرۡ لَنَا وَٱرۡحَمۡنَاۖ وَأَنتَ خَيۡرُ ٱلۡغَٰفِرِينَ
And Moses chose from his people seventy men for Our appointment.408 And when the earthquake seized them,409 he said, "My Lord, if You had willed, You could have destroyed them before and me [as well]. Would You destroy us for what the foolish among us have done? This is not but Your trial by which You send astray whom You will and guide whom You will. You are our Protector, so forgive us and have mercy upon us; and You are the best of forgivers.

Al-Mukhtasar
Moses chose seventy men among the best of his people to apologize to their Lord for the worship of the calf that the fools among them had committed. Allah promised them a time and place for them to attend. Then, when they attended, they were brazen with Allah and asked Moses to let them see Allah with their eyes. So an earthquake seized them, and they were struck down by its intensity and destroyed. So Moses begged his Lord, saying: O my Lord, if You had willed to destroy them, and me with them before they had come, You would have certainly destroyed them. Would You destroy us because of what the feeble-minded amongst us did? For the worship of the calf that my people committed is only a trial and test by which You lead astray whom You will, and You guide whom You will. You are in charge of our affair, so forgive us our wrongs, and have mercy on us with Your vast Mercy. You are the best of those who forgive wrongdoing and pardon sin.
