فَخَلَفَ مِنۢ بَعۡدِهِمۡ خَلۡفٞ وَرِثُواْ ٱلۡكِتَٰبَ يَأۡخُذُونَ عَرَضَ هَٰذَا ٱلۡأَدۡنَىٰ وَيَقُولُونَ سَيُغۡفَرُ لَنَا وَإِن يَأۡتِهِمۡ عَرَضٞ مِّثۡلُهُۥ يَأۡخُذُوهُۚ أَلَمۡ يُؤۡخَذۡ عَلَيۡهِم مِّيثَٰقُ ٱلۡكِتَٰبِ أَن لَّا يَقُولُواْ عَلَى ٱللَّهِ إِلَّا ٱلۡحَقَّ وَدَرَسُواْ مَا فِيهِۗ وَٱلدَّارُ ٱلۡأٓخِرَةُ خَيۡرٞ لِّلَّذِينَ يَتَّقُونَۚ أَفَلَا تَعۡقِلُونَ
And there followed them successors who inherited the Scripture [while] taking the commodities414 of this lower life and saying, "It will be forgiven for us." And if an offer like it415 comes to them, they will [again] take it. Was not the covenant of the Scripture [i.e., the Torah] taken from them that they would not say about Allāh except the truth, and they studied what was in it? And the home of the Hereafter is better for those who fear Allāh, so will you not use reason?

Al-Mukhtasar
Then, after those, the people of evil came to follow. They took the Torah from their predecessors, reading it and not acting upon what it contained. They took the lowly commodities of this life as a bribe for their distortion of the book of Allah and to judge with other than what Allah sent down in it. They would also speak favorably about themselves that Allah would forgive their sins. If any meager worldly payment came to them, they would take it time and time again. Did Allah not take covenants and contracts with them that they should not say anything about Allah except the truth without making any distortions or changes? They did not unknowingly leave off acting upon the book, but rather, they knew. They read what was in it and knew it, so their sin is even worse. The abode of the hereafter and the everlasting bliss within it are better than those passing commodities for the ones who take heed of Allah by complying with His commands and avoiding His prohibitions. Will those who took such measly commodities not realize that what Allah has prepared in the hereafter for the heedful is better and longer lasting?
