أَوۡ تَقُولُوٓاْ إِنَّمَآ أَشۡرَكَ ءَابَآؤُنَا مِن قَبۡلُ وَكُنَّا ذُرِّيَّةٗ مِّنۢ بَعۡدِهِمۡۖ أَفَتُهۡلِكُنَا بِمَا فَعَلَ ٱلۡمُبۡطِلُونَ
Or [lest] you say, "It was only that our fathers associated [others in worship] with Allāh before, and we were but descendants after them. Then would You destroy us for what the falsifiers have done?"

Al-Mukhtasar
Or argue that your forefathers were the ones who broke the covenant, for they made partners with Allah, and that you were blindly following your forefathers in the polytheism you found them upon and then say: Do You, O our Lord, hold us accountable for the actions of our forefathers who invalidated their deeds by associating partners with Allah and thus torment us? So there is no sin on us for our ignorance and blind following of our forefathers.
