And We sent to no city a prophet [who was denied] except that We seized its people with poverty and hardship that they might humble themselves [to Allāh].

Al-Mukhtasar
We did not send a prophet to any town and then its inhabitants rejected and disbelieved, except that We seized them with suffering, poverty, and illness in the hope they might humble themselves to Allah and thus leave what disbelief and arrogance they were upon. This is a warning to Quraysh and all who disbelieve and reject by mentioning Allah's way with rejecting nations.
