وَدَّ كَثِيرٞ مِّنۡ أَهۡلِ ٱلۡكِتَٰبِ لَوۡ يَرُدُّونَكُم مِّنۢ بَعۡدِ إِيمَٰنِكُمۡ كُفَّارًا حَسَدٗا مِّنۡ عِندِ أَنفُسِهِم مِّنۢ بَعۡدِ مَا تَبَيَّنَ لَهُمُ ٱلۡحَقُّۖ فَٱعۡفُواْ وَٱصۡفَحُواْ حَتَّىٰ يَأۡتِيَ ٱللَّهُ بِأَمۡرِهِۦٓۗ إِنَّ ٱللَّهَ عَلَىٰ كُلِّ شَيۡءٖ قَدِيرٞ
Many of the People of the Scripture wish they could turn you back to disbelief after you have believed, out of envy from themselves [even] after the truth has become clear to them. So pardon and overlook until Allāh delivers His command. Indeed, Allāh is over all things competent.

Al-Mukhtasar
Many Jews and Christians, out of envy, wish to turn you back to disbelief after belief, worshipping idols as you did before when it has become clear to them that what the Prophet came with is the truth from Allah. O believers, forgive them for their actions and pardon them for their ignorance and the evil in their souls until Allah's instruction concerning them comes, which has come: the disbeliever is given a choice between embracing Islam, paying the Jizyah (poll tax), or fighting [the Muslims]. Allah is Omnipotent, and they cannot hinder Him.
