وَإِذۡ نَجَّيۡنَٰكُم مِّنۡ ءَالِ فِرۡعَوۡنَ يَسُومُونَكُمۡ سُوٓءَ ٱلۡعَذَابِ يُذَبِّحُونَ أَبۡنَآءَكُمۡ وَيَسۡتَحۡيُونَ نِسَآءَكُمۡۚ وَفِي ذَٰلِكُم بَلَآءٞ مِّن رَّبِّكُمۡ عَظِيمٞ
And [recall] when We saved you [i.e., your forefathers] from the people of Pharaoh, who afflicted you with the worst torment, slaughtering your [newborn] sons and keeping your females alive. And in that was a great trial from your Lord.

Al-Mukhtasar
O Israelites, remember the time We saved you from the followers of Pharaoh who would make you taste various forms of punishment, slaughtering your sons so you would not survive and letting your women live so they could serve them, taking great pains to humiliate and insult you. And in your salvation from the onslaught of Pharoah and his followers and his people was a great test for you from your Lord, that perhaps you may be thankful.
