فَبَدَّلَ ٱلَّذِينَ ظَلَمُواْ قَوۡلًا غَيۡرَ ٱلَّذِي قِيلَ لَهُمۡ فَأَنزَلۡنَا عَلَى ٱلَّذِينَ ظَلَمُواْ رِجۡزٗا مِّنَ ٱلسَّمَآءِ بِمَا كَانُواْ يَفۡسُقُونَ
But those who wronged changed [those words] to a statement other than that which had been said to them, so We sent down upon those who wronged a punishment [i.e., plague] from the sky because they were defiantly disobeying.

Al-Mukhtasar
The wrongdoers among them distorted what they were commanded to do and say. They entered dragging themselves on their backs, proclaiming: 'A grain in a hair,' in an attempt to mock Allah's command, may He be Exalted. Allah sent down punishment from the sky upon these wrongdoers for transgressing the limits of the law and violating the command.
