بَلۡ ظَنَنتُمۡ أَن لَّن يَنقَلِبَ ٱلرَّسُولُ وَٱلۡمُؤۡمِنُونَ إِلَىٰٓ أَهۡلِيهِمۡ أَبَدٗا وَزُيِّنَ ذَٰلِكَ فِي قُلُوبِكُمۡ وَظَنَنتُمۡ ظَنَّ ٱلسَّوۡءِ وَكُنتُمۡ قَوۡمَۢا بُورٗا
But you thought that the Messenger and the believers would never return to their families, ever, and that was made pleasing in your hearts. And you assumed an assumption of evil and became a people ruined."

Al-Mukhtasar
The reason for your failure to join the Messenger in combat is not the excuse you gave him of being busy caring for your possessions and children. Rather, you thought that the Messenger and his companions would all perish and would not return to their families in Madīnah. The Devil beautified this in your hearts. Your thoughts led you to think wickedly about your Lord: that He would not help His Prophet. You became a doomed people because of your negative thoughts about Allah and because you fell behind from joining His Messenger [in battle].
