مَثَلُ ٱلَّذِينَ حُمِّلُواْ ٱلتَّوۡرَىٰةَ ثُمَّ لَمۡ يَحۡمِلُوهَا كَمَثَلِ ٱلۡحِمَارِ يَحۡمِلُ أَسۡفَارَۢاۚ بِئۡسَ مَثَلُ ٱلۡقَوۡمِ ٱلَّذِينَ كَذَّبُواْ بِـَٔايَٰتِ ٱللَّهِۚ وَٱللَّهُ لَا يَهۡدِي ٱلۡقَوۡمَ ٱلظَّٰلِمِينَ

The example of those who were entrusted with the Torah and then did not take it on¹⁶⁸⁷ is like that of a donkey who carries volumes [of books].¹⁶⁸⁸ Wretched is the example of the people who deny the signs of Allāh. And Allāh does not guide the wrongdoing people.

Al-Mukhtasar

Allah reminds us of the blessings He has bestowed upon us, such as sending the Messenger and revealing the Quran. He then mentions how some of Moses's followers turned away from acting upon the Torah as a warning for us to avoid following their footsteps. Allah states:

The example of the Jews, who were obliged to uphold what is in the Torah and then deserted what they were obliged with, is like the example of a donkey carrying large books, not knowing what is carried on it: are they books or something else? Atrocious is the example of the people who rejected the verses of Allah. Allah does not grant success in attaining the truth to the unjust people.
