وَقَالَتِ ٱلۡيَهُودُ وَٱلنَّصَٰرَىٰ نَحۡنُ أَبۡنَٰٓؤُاْ ٱللَّهِ وَأَحِبَّٰٓؤُهُۥۚ قُلۡ فَلِمَ يُعَذِّبُكُم بِذُنُوبِكُمۖ بَلۡ أَنتُم بَشَرٞ مِّمَّنۡ خَلَقَۚ يَغۡفِرُ لِمَن يَشَآءُ وَيُعَذِّبُ مَن يَشَآءُۚ وَلِلَّهِ مُلۡكُ ٱلسَّمَٰوَٰتِ وَٱلۡأَرۡضِ وَمَا بَيۡنَهُمَاۖ وَإِلَيۡهِ ٱلۡمَصِيرُ
But the Jews and the Christians say, "We are the children of Allāh and His beloved." Say, "Then why does He punish you for your sins?" Rather, you are human beings from among those He has created. He forgives whom He wills, and He punishes whom He wills. And to Allāh belongs the dominion of the heavens and the earth and whatever is between them, and to Him is the [final] destination.

Al-Mukhtasar
Both the Jews and the Christians claimed to be the children and loved ones of Allah. Say, O Messenger, in response to them: Why does Allah punish you for the sins you commit?! For if you were His loved ones as you claim, He would not punish you with killing and maiming in this life and with the Fire in the Afterlife because he does not punish those He loves. Rather, you are just like any other human. He rewards those who do good with Paradise and punishes those who do evil with the Fire. Allah forgives whom He wills due to His grace and punishes whom He wills due to His justice. The dominion of the heavens, the earth, and everything in between belongs only to Him, and to Him alone is the return.
