وَلَوۡ كَانُواْ يُؤۡمِنُونَ بِٱللَّهِ وَٱلنَّبِيِّ وَمَآ أُنزِلَ إِلَيۡهِ مَا ٱتَّخَذُوهُمۡ أَوۡلِيَآءَ وَلَٰكِنَّ كَثِيرٗا مِّنۡهُمۡ فَٰسِقُونَ
And if they had believed in Allāh and the Prophet and in what was revealed to him, they would not have taken them as allies; but many of them are defiantly disobedient.

Al-Mukhtasar
If those Jews had genuinely believed in Allah, Muhammad صلى الله عليه وسلم, and what Allah revealed to him in the Quran, they would not have taken the polytheists as allies, loving them and inclining towards them over the believers. That is because they were prohibited from taking the disbelievers as allies. But many Jews disobey Allah and do not side with Allah and the believers.
