وَإِذۡ أَخَذَ ٱللَّهُ مِيثَٰقَ ٱلَّذِينَ أُوتُواْ ٱلۡكِتَٰبَ لَتُبَيِّنُنَّهُۥ لِلنَّاسِ وَلَا تَكۡتُمُونَهُۥ فَنَبَذُوهُ وَرَآءَ ظُهُورِهِمۡ وَٱشۡتَرَوۡاْ بِهِۦ ثَمَنٗا قَلِيلٗاۖ فَبِئۡسَ مَا يَشۡتَرُونَ
And [mention, O Muḥammad], when Allāh took a covenant from those who were given the Scripture, [saying], "You must make it clear [i.e., explain it] to the people and not conceal it." But they threw it away behind their backs and exchanged it for a small price. And wretched is that which they purchased.

Al-Mukhtasar
Remember, O Prophet, when Allah took a firm covenant from the scholars among the Jews and Christians to clarify the Book of Allah for people, not to hide what it contains of guidance and what proves the prophethood of Muhammad صلى الله عليه وسلم. No one was among them except they cast off and did not observe the covenant. They concealed the truth and expressed falsehood. They traded the covenant of Allah for a trifling price, like for the prestige and wealth they had obtained. How terrible is this price for which they traded Allah's covenant!
