۞ وَمَآ أُبَرِّئُ نَفۡسِيٓۚ إِنَّ ٱلنَّفۡسَ لَأَمَّارَةُۢ بِٱلسُّوٓءِ إِلَّا مَا رَحِمَ رَبِّيٓۚ إِنَّ رَبِّي غَفُورٞ رَّحِيمٞ
And I do not acquit myself. Indeed, the soul is a persistent enjoiner of evil, except those upon which my Lord has mercy. Indeed, my Lord is Forgiving and Merciful."601

- 601 Although Ibn Katheer attributes the words of verses 52-53 to the wife of al-ʿAzeez, others have concluded that they were spoken by Joseph, thereby justifying his request for an inquiry and acknowledging Allāh's mercy to him.

Al-Mukhtasar
The minister's wife continued speaking, saying, I am not free of blame for wanting evil, and I was not trying to justify myself; the human self often commands evil. This is because of its inclination towards what it desires and the difficulty of refraining from it, except for those souls whom Allah shows mercy, preventing their egos from commanding them to evil. Allah is Forgiving and Compassionate towards those of His slaves who repent to Him.
