قَالُواْ جَزَٰٓؤُهُۥ مَن وُجِدَ فِي رَحۡلِهِۦ فَهُوَ جَزَٰٓؤُهُۥۚ كَذَٰلِكَ نَجۡزِي ٱلظَّٰلِمِينَ
[The brothers] said, "Its recompense is that he in whose bag it is found - he [himself] will be its recompense.608 Thus do we recompense the wrongdoers."

- 608 According to their law, a convicted thief was made a slave of the one from whom he had stolen.

Al-Mukhtasar
Joseph's brothers said: The punishment for any thief among us is that if the stolen item is found in his bag, he will be surrendered to the person he stole from and made to become his slave. To be made a slave is how we punish thieves.
