Surah Al-Anfal 8:17 الأنفال

فَلَمۡ تَقۡتُلُوهُمۡ وَلَٰكِنَّ ٱللَّهَ قَتَلَهُمۡۚ وَمَا رَمَيۡتَ إِذۡ رَمَيۡتَ وَلَٰكِنَّ ٱللَّهَ رَمَىٰ وَلِيُبۡلِيَ ٱلۡمُؤۡمِنِينَ مِنۡهُ بَلَآءً حَسَنًاۚ إِنَّ ٱللَّهَ سَمِيعٌ عَلِيمٞ
And you did not kill them, but it was Allāh who killed them.440 And you threw not, [O Muḥammad], when you threw, but it was Allāh who threw441 that He might test the believers with a good test.442 Indeed, Allāh is Hearing and Knowing.
Translator notes (3)
- 440 i.e., Your strength was insufficient to overcome them, but Allāh supported you and gave you victory.
- 441 When the Prophet (ﷺ) threw a handful of dust into the faces of the disbelievers, Allāh caused it to fill the eyes and nose of every soldier, preventing their advance.
- 442 So that they would appreciate Allāh's favor to them.

Al-Mukhtasar
O believers, you did not kill the polytheists on the Day of Badr with your own power and strength; rather, Allah helped you with that. And you did not throw, O Prophet, at the disbelievers when you threw; rather, Allah threw at them when He made your throw reach them. And He will certainly test the believers with victory over their enemies, which He blessed them with, despite their meager numbers and equipment, so that they thank Him. Indeed, Allah hears your supplication and speech and knows your actions and what benefits you.
