Surah Al-Baqarah 2:142 البقرة

۞ سَيَقُولُ ٱلسُّفَهَآءُ مِنَ ٱلنَّاسِ مَا وَلَّىٰهُمۡ عَن قِبۡلَتِهِمُ ٱلَّتِي كَانُواْ عَلَيۡهَاۚ قُل لِّلَّهِ ٱلۡمَشۡرِقُ وَٱلۡمَغۡرِبُۚ يَهۡدِي مَن يَشَآءُ إِلَىٰ صِرَٰطٖ مُّسۡتَقِيمٖ

The foolish among the people will say, "What has turned them away from their qiblah,⁵⁰ which they used to face?"⁵¹ Say, "To Allāh belongs the east and the west. He guides whom He wills to a straight path."

50 The direction faced in prayer.
51 Prior to the command (in verse 144) that the Prophet (ﷺ) and his followers turn toward the Kaʿbah in Makkah for prayer, they had been facing Jerusalem to the north. The implications of this change are mentioned in succeeding verses.

Al-Mukhtasar

The weak-minded, ignorant ones from the Jews and those like them from the hypocrites will say: What caused the Muslims to turn away from their Qiblah (direction of prayer), Jerusalem, that they used to pray towards?! O Prophet, say in response to them: Allah alone owns the dominion of the lands to the East and the West and in every direction. He turns who He wills from His slaves to any direction He wills. He (may He be Exalted) guides whom He wills from His slaves to the straight path free from crookedness and deviation.
