۞ وَمَا كَانَ ٱلۡمُؤۡمِنُونَ لِيَنفِرُواْ كَآفَّةٗۚ فَلَوۡلَا نَفَرَ مِن كُلِّ فِرۡقَةٖ مِّنۡهُمۡ طَآئِفَةٞ لِّيَتَفَقَّهُواْ فِي ٱلدِّينِ وَلِيُنذِرُواْ قَوۡمَهُمۡ إِذَا رَجَعُوٓاْ إِلَيۡهِمۡ لَعَلَّهُمۡ يَحۡذَرُونَ
And it is not for the believers to go forth [to battle] all at once. For there should separate from every division of them a group [remaining] to obtain understanding in the religion and warn [i.e., advise] their people when they return to them that they might be cautious.

Al-Mukhtasar
It is not appropriate for believers to go out all together to fight lest they be wiped out if their enemy overcomes them. Why does one group not go out to fight, and another group remain behind to accompany Allah's Messenger صلى الله عليه وسلم and learn the religion by listening to the Quran and sacred laws from him so they can advise their people when they return to them of what they have learned so that they are aware of Allah's torment and punishment and comply with His instructions and avoid His prohibitions? This concerned the troops that Allah's Messenger صلى الله عليه وسلم would send to different areas, choosing a group from among his companions.
