ٱتَّخَذُوٓاْ أَحۡبَارَهُمۡ وَرُهۡبَٰنَهُمۡ أَرۡبَابٗا مِّن دُونِ ٱللَّهِ وَٱلۡمَسِيحَ ٱبۡنَ مَرۡيَمَ وَمَآ أُمِرُوٓاْ إِلَّا لِيَعۡبُدُوٓاْ إِلَٰهٗا وَٰحِدٗاۖ لَّآ إِلَٰهَ إِلَّا هُوَۚ سُبۡحَٰنَهُۥ عَمَّا يُشۡرِكُونَ
They have taken their scholars and monks as lords besides Allāh,467 and [also] the Messiah, the son of Mary.468 And they were not commanded except to worship one God; there is no deity except Him. Exalted is He above whatever they associate with Him.

Al-Mukhtasar
The Jews made their scholars lords instead of Allah, as did the Christians with their monks. They would permit for them what Allah prohibited them from and prohibit them from what Allah permitted for them. The Christians made the Messiah, Jesus, son of Mary, a deity with Allah. Allah did not command the Jews' scholars and Christians' monks, nor Ezra and Jesus, son of Mary, except that they worship Him alone and not associate any partners with Him, for He, may He be glorified, is one deity. There is no rightful object of worship besides Him. Exalted is He from having a partner, as these polytheists and others say.
