إِنَّ عِدَّةَ ٱلشُّهُورِ عِندَ ٱللَّهِ ٱثۡنَا عَشَرَ شَهۡرٗا فِي كِتَٰبِ ٱللَّهِ يَوۡمَ خَلَقَ ٱلسَّمَٰوَٰتِ وَٱلۡأَرۡضَ مِنۡهَآ أَرۡبَعَةٌ حُرُمٞۚ ذَٰلِكَ ٱلدِّينُ ٱلۡقَيِّمُۚ فَلَا تَظۡلِمُواْ فِيهِنَّ أَنفُسَكُمۡۚ وَقَٰتِلُواْ ٱلۡمُشۡرِكِينَ كَآفَّةٗ كَمَا يُقَٰتِلُونَكُمۡ كَآفَّةٗۚ وَٱعۡلَمُوٓاْ أَنَّ ٱللَّهَ مَعَ ٱلۡمُتَّقِينَ
Indeed, the number of months with Allāh is twelve [lunar] months in the register of Allāh [from] the day He created the heavens and the earth; of these, four are sacred.471 That is the correct religion [i.e., way], so do not wrong yourselves during them.472 And fight against the disbelievers collectively as they fight against you collectively. And know that Allāh is with the righteous [who fear Him].

Al-Mukhtasar
In Allah's judgment and decree, the number of months of the year is 12 months, as Allah established in al-Lawh al-Mahfuz (the Preserved Tablet), the first thing He created the heavens and the earth. Of these 12 months, there are four months in which Allah has forbidden fighting. Three are consecutive (Dhu'l-Qa'dah, Dhu'l-Hijjah, and Muharram), and one is not (the month of Rajab). The aforementioned are the number of months in the year, and the prohibition of four is the straight religion. Do not wrong yourselves in these sacred months by fighting within them and violating their sanctity. Moreover, fight all polytheists as they fight you all. Know that Allah is with those who fear Him -by obeying what He commanded and avoiding what He prohibited- with victory and steadfastness. Whomever Allah is with, no one will defeat him.
