وَلَقَدۡ أَهۡلَكۡنَا ٱلۡقُرُونَ مِن قَبۡلِكُمۡ لَمَّا ظَلَمُواْ وَجَآءَتۡهُمۡ رُسُلُهُم بِٱلۡبَيِّنَٰتِ وَمَا كَانُواْ لِيُؤۡمِنُواْۚ كَذَٰلِكَ نَجۡزِي ٱلۡقَوۡمَ ٱلۡمُجۡرِمِينَ
And We had already destroyed generations before you when they wronged, and their messengers had come to them with clear proofs, but they were not to believe. Thus do We recompense the criminal people.

Al-Mukhtasar
And We destroyed nations before you, O polytheists, because they rejected the messengers of Allah and committed sins. Though their messengers came to them with clear proofs proving the truthfulness of what they brought from their Lord, they were not keen to believe, so Allah deserted them and did not guide them. Just as We recompensed those previous wrongdoing nations, We recompense those who are like them in all times and places.
