وَلَمَّا جَآءَ مُوسَىٰ لِمِيقَٰتِنَا وَكَلَّمَهُۥ رَبُّهُۥ قَالَ رَبِّ أَرِنِيٓ أَنظُرۡ إِلَيۡكَۚ قَالَ لَن تَرَىٰنِي وَلَٰكِنِ ٱنظُرۡ إِلَى ٱلۡجَبَلِ فَإِنِ ٱسۡتَقَرَّ مَكَانَهُۥ فَسَوۡفَ تَرَىٰنِيۚ فَلَمَّا تَجَلَّىٰ رَبُّهُۥ لِلۡجَبَلِ جَعَلَهُۥ دَكّٗا وَخَرَّ مُوسَىٰ صَعِقٗاۚ فَلَمَّآ أَفَاقَ قَالَ سُبۡحَٰنَكَ تُبۡتُ إِلَيۡكَ وَأَنَا۠ أَوَّلُ ٱلۡمُؤۡمِنِينَ
And when Moses arrived at Our appointed time and his Lord spoke to him, he said, "My Lord, show me [Yourself] that I may look at You." [Allāh] said, "You will not see Me,401 but look at the mountain; if it should remain in place, then you will see Me." But when his Lord appeared to the mountain, He rendered it level,402 and Moses fell unconscious. And when he awoke, he said, "Exalted are You! I have repented to You, and I am the first [among my people] of the believers."[403]

Al-Mukhtasar
When Moses came for the private conversation with his Lord at the appointment designated for him, which was a full forty nights, and his Lord spoke to him with commands, prohibitions, and otherwise, Moses yearned to see his Lord, so he asked to look upon Him. So, Allah, may He be Exalted and Transcendent, replied: You will not see Me in the worldly life because of your inability to endure that, but look, instead, at the mountain when I reveal Myself to it, for if it remains in its place, unaffected, then You will see Me; and if it becomes leveled to the ground, then you will not be able to see Me in the [life of this] world.Then, when Allah revealed Himself to the mountain, He made it leveled to the ground, and Moses fell unconscious. Then, when he recovered from the unconsciousness that overtook him, he said: I declare Your Perfection, O Lord, far above all that which does not befit You. Here I am, turned to You in repentance from what I asked You of seeing You in the world, and I am the first believer among my people.
