أَيَّامٗا مَّعۡدُودَٰتٖۚ فَمَن كَانَ مِنكُم مَّرِيضًا أَوۡ عَلَىٰ سَفَرٖ فَعِدَّةٞ مِّنۡ أَيَّامٍ أُخَرَۚ وَعَلَى ٱلَّذِينَ يُطِيقُونَهُۥ فِدۡيَةٞ طَعَامُ مِسۡكِينٖۖ فَمَن تَطَوَّعَ خَيۡرٗا فَهُوَ خَيۡرٞ لَّهُۥۚ وَأَن تَصُومُواْ خَيۡرٞ لَّكُمۡ إِن كُنتُمۡ تَعۡلَمُونَ
[Fasting for] a limited number of days. So whoever among you is ill or on a journey [during them] - then an equal number of other days [are to be made up]. And upon those who are able [to fast, but with hardship] - a ransom [as substitute] of feeding a poor person [each day]. And whoever volunteers good [i.e., excess] - it is better for him. But to fast is best for you, if you only knew.

Al-Mukhtasar
The prescribed fast is for a small number of days from the year. But whoever among you is ill with an illness that makes fasting difficult or traveling, then they do not need to fast, and they can make up for these days by fasting the same number of other days. Those who can fast but do not should compensate by feeding a poor person every day they did not fast. Whoever feeds more than one poor person per day or feeds and makes up the fast as well, then that is better. Fasting is better for you than not fasting and feeding a poor person instead if you only knew the distinction of fasting. This was the first of Allah's decreed laws about fasting: whoever wanted to fast could do so, and whoever did not want to fast was permitted not to do so and instead feed a poor person. Afterward, Allah made fasting a mandatory obligation for every able person who has reached puberty.
